Premchai 103
The tin dredger Premchai 103, alias Thai Muang Wreck and Condreco
This is the youngest of the wrecks you can visit in The Andaman Sea just of the coast of Khao Lak and Tap Lamu Pier. Premchai sank in September 2000 and was 50 m long and about 20 m wide and 12 meters high which makes this an enormous structure to go scuba diving on. It is sitting on the seabed in between 16 and 21 meters of water making it accessible for all divers from open water divers over advanced deep divers to technical divers alike.
This isyour chance to go with Khaolak Scuba Adventures to explore the youngest of our two Tin Mining Wrecks. Being further into the bayit’s not clear water like Similan or Surin Islands or visibility like Koh Bon or Richelieu Rock but good diving none the less. The enormous structure is as hiding place for juveniles and lots of bigger fish has as wellmade Premchai 103 their home and we don’t think they care if we call it Premchai, Thai Muang or Condreco – they all just welcome their new home. And of course when you have juveniles you will have predators as well. An old Great Barracuda have made Premchai its home and is seen on most of our trips.
Here we can all be part of the fun. From Open Water Certificate and up you can go and have a look at the larger fish looking for snacks around the Premchai. Jacks on the hunt, schools of colorful Fusilier’s well camouflagedScorpion fish, hovering Lion Fish, different kind of Moray Eels and bright collard Nudi Branches have their daily life on the good old Premchai. There is something going on all over, all the time.
Since you are on a dive site with an average of more than 15 meters it will extend your bottom time dramatically if you do this dive on nitrox. Khaolak Scuba Adventures is offering you an enriched air diver certificate on all of these trips, if you don’t have it already this is a good chance to get certified by our multilingual professional PADI Dive Instructors. You can do your advanced wreck diving course and take a peek inside or explore further with advanced Technical diving. If you don’t know how we will be glad to teach you and the chief on the rooter of our battleship of Tech Diving is the highly qualified and worldwide recognized Technical Dive Instructor: Ben Reymenants.
Boonsung
In 1984 the tin mining platform Boonsung, or Boon Sung or even Bansak or Bang Sak, sank between Khao Lak and the Similan Islands.
Since 1984 many names coming from different translations have been given to this our oldest local wreck. Its normal in Thailand to have slightly different ways of spelling in English since Thais use a different alphabet, so Boonsung and Boon Sung are obvious almost the same and the same is Bansak and Ban Sak, and the difference between the two names is probably just lost in translation.
Khaolak Scuba Adventures take you here 5 days a week in combination with either Premchai Wreck or as a two dive trip. Considered the best local day trip for scuba diving we have this wreck on most of our local scuba diving daytrips. Best local daytrip is due to the old age of the Boonsung Wreck, since 1984 corals have been growing here and habitants have moved in generations ago, giving Boon Sung Wreck more life than the Premchai. More life but less wreck is what we say at Khaolak Scuba Adventures so then it’s up to your preferences what you like more. No matter what your preference is The Boonsung can be dived by all certified divers with a maximum depth of 10 to 20 meters and no places left to penetrate due to the condition of the structure and the huge amount of coral growth on the wreck.
You can combine this wreck on your PADI Advanced Open Water Course or get certified to dive with enriched air and get your nitrox certification witch will extend your bottom timedramatically. Or bring a camera to capture the images of the inhabitants of the Boonsung wreck. A good chance to do you PADI Digital Underwater Photographer course with lots of cool stuff to photograph. Take only pictures and leave only bubbles.
During the Tsunami on the 26th of December where Khao Lak took a terrible and devastating banging by the waves, The Boonsung wreck was hit as well. The structure was ripped apart and is now in 5 pieces, 3 major structures and 2 smaller parts and you can easily spend several dives here and still find new small cracks hiding wonders from the magnificent marine life of The Andaman Sea.
All kinds of Moray Eels, huge amounts of Lion Fish and Scorpion fish, schools of juveniles, Cleaner Fish and Scrimps gives all the habitants and strangers passing by a chance for a fish makeover. Predators looking for food, cruise around in big schools and when you have counted 100.000 fish you can stop; that’s when Khaolak Scuba Adventures guarantee stops – you see fish all over on the Boonsung Wreck.
